The worlds largest Dreambox community – www.i-have-a-dreambox.com – calls up to a boycott against the new Astra satellite plattform HD+

Hamburg, 20th of July 2009: The with 210.000 registerated members worldwide largest Dreambox-community, and largest German board about TV and radio reception over satellite or cable calls up a boycott against the new digital TV plattform HD+, introduced by the satellite operator Astra and the involved broadcasting stations, using the new CI+ broadcasting process. According to the operators of www.i-have-a-dreambox.com and the user of that plattform, HD+ should be just another attempt to force the customers a disadvantageously, technically unnessecary, associated with high costs technology.

As latest known informations by the operators are, there will be needed new receiving technology. If a customer wants to cunsum a broadcaster which is at the HD+ plattform, he will be forced to get a receiver with HD+ capability. Already existing receivers, which are capable to receive digital TV, are not compatible to the HD+ technology. HD+ is not a new or better standard for HDTV, but it only tells, that the CI+ encryption system is used.

In addition to, a new Digital Rights Management system (DRM) will be introduced into the TV consumption, similar is has been tryed by the music industry. With the new technology a broadcaster may determine, if a consumer can record, do timeshift or do fast forward in advertising breaks in records. Aditional disadvanteges are considered by the case, that HD+ certified receivers can only decrypt a single encrypting system, so that users of foreign broadcasting stations would have to use additional hardware. Just as a side effect, there is a support for the formation of a monopol and not guaranted customer investment security, binding the receiving technology to one single supplier.

Similar the DRM system of the music industry, here is being done an attempt, to create a distribution channel starting at the content provider until the end user, which is just in the meaning of the providers. Associatet with every disadvantage for the customer. At the example of DRM protected music, you can see, that such customer manipulation can't be operated profitable for a long time. All big online music stores are switching to non DRM protected systems already now. This shows us, that the only way for a permanent marketing of a system is, to give the cusomer the maximum of freedom.

Especially in the area of digital TV reception has been shown at the past, that through a restrictiv encryption system or excessive prices, has been a race between the encryption providers and a technically versed hacker community for the security of a crypto-plattform. Through this fight forced to the providers, they are forced to do large investations for the extension of there security sastems. The providers may have legitimated reason to protect licensed content and getting around the encryption would be a criminal offense, but the higher the restrictations for the cusomers through the esablished procedures are, the higher will be the incentive, to get around them. So the providers are forced to upgrade their plattforms again, which has to pay the customer with higher subscription prices in the end.

In addition to buy a new HD+ receiver and HD+ smartcards, the distribution modell also provides a monthly base of 4,50 € (54 € a year). By now already known informations, the german Free-TV broadcasting stations RTL, RTL2 and VOX, as well as Pro7, Sat1 and Kabel1 will be introduced in their HD version. So customers will be asked to fund in a second way, in addition to commercials. The added value that comes through the HDTV broadcast can't be the justification to change Free-TV into a “Pay-TV-light“ system.

Overall this concept doesn't make the impression to promote HDTV or to find a wide user base. The customer won't let him sale a technology which brings him only disadvantages, just as the providers from “entavio“ had to experience it. This is shown by polls arount that theme, where about 80% of the sorveyed are expressing negative or unfavorable. Instead of this, the advertising-financed, in HDTV broadcasted television will be delayed another time.

Because of the shown circumstances, it can only be disadvised the customer, to board into the HD+ technology and boycott its esablishment.

###

We call all our users and also other boards and communities from the Sat/Cable and TV scene, to participiate in this call with self created banners, avatars, twitter-messages or other creative ideas. We are the target group of the HD+ plattform and should subjugate this dictation. It depends on us, if the product HD+ can be established on the market or not.
